Apple went big this morning. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are official. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, and they ship the following Friday, September 18. Prices start at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy.

What's Inside This Year's Phone

Worth knowing what you're protecting here, because most of this year's upgrades are things you'd rather not put on concrete.

The headline is the 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. It's the first time Apple has brought aperture control to iPhone. Six laser-cut blades move between settings, opening to f/1.48 for low light and closing to f/4 when you want more of a group in focus. So there is now a small mechanical assembly moving around behind the rear glass. Protecting that is a different proposition to protecting a fixed lens.

The A20 Pro runs on a 2-nanometer process, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU that Apple rates at up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The vapor chamber was rebuilt with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro's, which is where the sustained performance gains come from. Battery improved as well: eSIM-only models are rated for up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.

The Dynamic Island shrank and can now show three Live Activities at once. For case-buying purposes that matters in exactly one respect. The bezel has to clear it cleanly.

Rugged vs Crystal

This is where most people land, so let's settle it. The protection is identical. Both carry the same 360-degree rating for drops up to six feet, both exceed military drop-test standards, and neither one is the sensible pick with the other being the vain one.

The difference is construction and appearance.

The Rugged Case is a black dual-compound shell with reinforced corners, a raised bezel around the screen and the camera system, and textured grips down the sides. The grips are the underrated part. A case that's harder to drop beats a case that survives drops. It's still slim enough to live in a pocket, which Rokform treats as a design rule.

The Crystal Case uses a flexible TPU body with polycarbonate components built in for rigidity and impact resistance. The polycarbonate is what matters. Clear cases are usually where protection gets quietly traded away for looks, and this one doesn't do that.

Camera shielding is the specific upgrade this generation. Rokform's CEO Jeff Whitten described the iPhone 18 lineup as the company's most advanced protection yet, with improved shielding around the camera lenses, while holding to their no-unnecessary-bulk design policy. Given what's now moving around behind that glass, that's the right place to have spent the engineering.

The case has more work to do on this phone. A Pro Max is bigger and heavier, so it arrives with more behind it and tends to land flat instead of on a corner. Reinforced corners and grip texture stop being nice-to-haves. And this is the $1,299 phone before you've touched storage.

One detail from the listing is worth flagging. The box contents specify a rugged case with built-in screen protection, which isn't how their standard iPhone cases ship and makes sense for a folding display that can't take conventional tempered glass. The listing also includes a magnetic and a non-magnetic plug, with the non-magnetic one installed by default, so the magnet array is your call.

Whichever phone you end up on, these two accessories are the ones that make sense alongside a Rokform case. Both are built around the same MAGMAX magnets.

The raised bezel keeps the lenses off flat surfaces, though it won't stop grit that gets in there. With a moving aperture assembly behind that glass now, a lens protector is cheap insurance.
