Small-Batch Dark Roast Since 1966

Peet's was founded in Berkeley in 1966 by Alfred Peet, a Dutch roaster who introduced dark-roasted arabica to an American market that had barely encountered it, hand-roasting in small batches and selling beans rather than cups. That style is still the house signature, and the blends built on it remain the best sellers. The range covers whole bean and ground coffee, espresso blends, single origins, pods and capsules, teas and seasonal limited releases, sold direct, through around 200 cafés and in grocery stores nationwide. Direct orders ship soon after roasting. Subscriptions add free domestic shipping, subscriber-only coffees and flexible scheduling. The company was acquired by Keurig Dr Pepper in 2025.

Buy by Roast Date

Coffee is one of the few things where buying direct changes the product rather than just the price. A bag bought from a supermarket shelf carries a best-by date, which can sit a year out and tells you nothing about when the beans were roasted. Ordering from the roaster gets coffee that was roasted recently, and that difference is far more noticeable in the cup than the choice between two blends. Beans hold their character for a few weeks after roasting and decline steadily after that, which is the argument for a subscription over a large one-off order: smaller amounts, more often, is better coffee than a bulk buy that sits in a cupboard. Buy whole bean and grind it yourself if you can, since ground coffee loses aroma within days.
