The Free Night Requires a Paid One

Stay Plus used to work differently, which is why people arrive at it expecting something else. It is a second-night-free mechanic: book two or more consecutive nights at a participating property, pay for one, and the higher-priced night is waived. Two come with a membership year. That rewards a particular shape of trip rather than any trip, since two nights at an expensive hotel returns several times what two nights at a budget one does, and a single-night stay returns nothing. It cannot be spread around either, with one per booking and consecutive bookings at the same hotel blocked. Blackout dates cover the periods you would most want to travel, participation varies by property, and points cannot cover the paid night. It is a benefit you plan a trip around rather than one that turns up when convenient.
