Steel Beds That Bolt Together Nine Ways

Vego Garden makes modular metal raised beds from a material it developed itself, a steel core hot-dip coated in zinc, aluminium and a small proportion of magnesium, finished with a USDA-compliant food-grade paint. The magnesium is the point of difference: at cut edges, where a metal bed is most vulnerable, the zinc and magnesium form a protective film over the exposed steel, and the material's corrosion performance was independently tested at the Texas A&M National Corrosion Laboratory. Beds ship flat and bolt together into several different footprints from the same kit, so the same panels can become a long narrow bed, a square, or an L to fit a corner. Heights run from shallow herb-depth up to waist height, corners are rounded with rubber edging rather than cut square, and the range extends to trellises, composting systems, watering kits and grow light shelving.

The Soil Costs More Than the Bed

A waist-height raised bed is a container, and containers need filling. Filled entirely with bagged soil or compost, a tall bed routinely costs more to fill than it cost to buy, and the realisation usually arrives at the garden centre with the bed already assembled in the yard. The manufacturer's own answer is hugelkultur, and it is free: large logs at the bottom, smaller branches above, then grass clippings, leaves and kitchen scraps, with bought compost and topsoil reserved for the top layers where roots actually sit. The wood holds water through dry spells and breaks down into fertility over several years, so you buy soil for roughly the top third rather than the whole volume. Choose height by crop rather than by appearance, since every extra inch is more volume to pay for.
